Background

A Brisbane-based cement manufacturer needed to stabilise and store stockpiles of gypsum on an exposed site for up to 12 months at a time.

Vital Chemical was engaged to deliver a long-term, sustainable application method to prevent sediment mobilisation into the environment.

Challenge

The friable nature of gypsum presented a key challenge for the site, with concerns the fine, particulate matter may travel from the site’s batters into the adjacent waterways.

The raw material format of the gypsum meant no contaminants were able to be introduced during storage, as this would have rendered the material unsuitable for future use in cement production.

The project brief required the delivery of an efficient, effective and sustainable solution to prevent product loss and erosion from wind and rainfall events.

Vital Chemical recommended the application of Vital Bon-Matt Stonewall, an industry leading erosion and sediment control product proven to provide instant stabilisation to a wide range of applications including steep, exposed surface areas.

Solution

The strong, flexible binding properties of Vital Bon-Matt Stonewall instantly reduced the risk of surface mobilisation, securing the site and preventing particulate movement.

Vital Chemical’s renowned polymer technology is scientifically developed and independently proven to provide immediate surface stabilisation across a wide range of projects, delivering an environmentally sound solution to prevent sediment loss from erosion.

Vital Chemical’s fleet of all-terrain vehicles and application equipment provided the team of technical experts with the resources and confidence to expertly navigate the steep batters and provide the client with the desired level of coverage.

Result

Vital Chemical’s application of Vital Bon-Matt Stonewall successfully delivered the required site stabilisation for the 12-month period post-application.

The non-hazardous and environmentally sound polymer technology ensured a non-toxic solution that preserved the integrity of the gypsum, maintaining its suitability for future use in cement production.

The polymer’s strong resilience to environmental impacts effectively prevented remobilisation, meeting the client’s requirements to provide a sustainably developed solution to minimise product loss and reduce risk to the local environment.
