Brisbane Airport New Parallel Runway

Background

The challenge was to find a material that could stop the movement and the natural erosive nature of the sand.  After rigorous environmental and performance analysis, Vital Bon-Matt Stonewall was applied to the exposed surface of the sand bund.  The environmentally sound product provided a robust surface treatment that encapsulated over 95% of the total platform area of 300 hectares.

Problem

Brisbane airport erosion control

This project faced unique challenges from an erosion and sediment control perspective to stabilise 1.1 million cubic meters of sand

Solution

Chemicals being applied out of a truck

The challenge was to find a material that could stop the movement and the natural erosive nature of the sand.  After rigorous environmental and performance analysis, Vital Bon-Matt Stonewall was applied to the exposed surface of the sand bund.  The environmentally sound product provided a robust surface treatment that encapsulated over 95% of the total platform area of 300 hectares.

Benefit

Chemicals being applied by a truck

By adopting environmental best practice philosophies and delivering immediate stabilisation, Vital Bon-Matt Stonewall provided clear sustainability deliverables.

ENVIRONMENT | INNOVATION | SUSTAINABLE PROCUREMENT | WATER | LEGACY

  • Prevention of onsite erosion ensured no contamination of surrounding waterways from unstablilised material.
  • Reduction in wind erosion of the Vital Bon-Matt Stonewall treated surface area ensured high visibility and improved air quality.
  • Installing a successful ground control method to the unique environment of an active airport enabled this methodology to be adopted in other airport runway expansions.
  • Significant water savings and considerable cost savings were achieved with this best value solution.
  • Lower demand for machinery lead to economical site maintenance.
