A Hole in One for Golf Course Revegetation

Background

A Canberra-based country club undertook a comprehensive restoration of its golf course.

The project was split into two stages, with the club closing nine holes at a time to ensure patrons could still enjoy a game throughout the works.

Complete Turf & Landscaping was engaged to deliver the revegetation works due to their extensive experience in golf course revegetation and maintenance in the Canberra region.

Challenge

The club was under tight time constraints to complete the works due to the necessity to close part of the course for each stage, and the project brief advised there was limited budget to complete the works, requiring a cost-effective revegetation solution.

The course design required different seed blends for different areas – rough areas needed longer, courser grass whereas the fairway areas required a finer, smoother variety.

This requirement introduced logistical complexities with precise application management required to avoid overlapping course zones and mixing seed specifications.

The project was further impacted by the region’s challenging weather conditions, with the recent heavy rainfalls delaying start dates and rendering the clay-based soils too soft for the application equipment to deploy to site.

Solution

Complete Turf & Landscaping recommended the application of Vital Chemical’s VE Gro-Matt, a bonded-fibre matrix hydromulch solution sustainably manufactured from Australian heat treated fibres.

VE Gro-Matt delivered instant soil stabilisation to the site, protecting the newly sculpted grounds against erosion from wind or rainfall events.

Complete Turf & Landscaping’s application team ensured the tanks were cleaned between seed blend changes, ensuring no cross contamination between the different areas of the grounds.

To further mitigate the mixing of seed blends and maintain precision during the application, hand-operated spray hoses were used at transition points between zones, preventing overlap and preserving the seed specifications and required growth outcomes of each area.

The single pass hydraulic application method provided an efficient and evenly distributed ground cover with the product’s superior moisture holding capacities reducing the requirement for water, delivering additional cost savings.

Result

Complete Turf & Landscaping’s application achieved rapid seed germination and successful growth across the first nine holes within the required timeframe.

The project was completed on time and within budget, with the second stage commencing shortly after.
