Sustainable ESC Solutions for Canberra’s Urban Development Sector

Background

A large-scale housing development in Canberra required a tailored approach to revegetation and erosion control across staged construction zones.

The client’s project brief included the requirement for an efficient and cost-effective solution that reduced impact on project operations, whilst ensuring alignment with the principal contractor’s sustainability policy.

Challenge

The exposed nature of the development site, combined with the region’s high wind speeds and unfavourably cold weather conditions presented a number of key challenges.

Areas of the site were being actively cleared to support future development, leaving them at risk of erosion from weather events. The region’s particularly strong winds presented a high risk of particulate movement across the existing development and neighbouring environment.

As the construction of new homes was completed, a revegetation approach was required to create green spaces across backyards, house frontages and designated public areas. Canberra’s seasonal weather conditions and poor soil quality meant traditional turfing was not a viable option, presenting an opportunity to source an alternative solution.

Solution

Vital Chemical worked with key industry partner, and local erosion and sediment control expert, Complete Turf & Landscaping to implement a dual-application strategy that addressed the specific challenges of the site: Vital Bon-Matt Stonewall and VE Gro-Matt hydromulch.

Vital Bon-Matt Stonewall Erosion and Dust Control Solution

Vital Bon-Matt Stonewall was applied to the cleared areas, delivering instant stabilisation to the exposed surfaces, effectively binding dust particles and fugitive particulate matter.

Once applied, the scientifically formulated polymer technology cures in hours, mitigating the risk of remobilisation into the surrounding environment and providing resistance to high wind speeds and heavy rainfall.

VE Gro-Matt Hydromulch Revegetation Solution

VE Gro-Matt is a Bonded Fibre Matrix hydromulch solution that supports rapid seed germination to mitigate erosion whilst promoting a sustainable growth environment in challenging conditions.

Specifically designed for a range of revegetation projects, including soil repair and soil amelioration, VE Gro-Matt’s unique moisture holding capacities delivers reduced watering requirements and economical benefits.

Result

The dual approach allowed for a single application of each product, providing an efficient and cost-effective method that delivered a sustainable outcome in line with the project’s requirements.

The application of Vital Bon-Matt Stonewall instantly stabilised the required surface area, mitigating the risk of sediment movement and withstanding erosion from the strong winds.

VE Gro-Matt supported the establishment of resilient vegetation despite the soil conditions, encouraging the long-term development of viable, large area, self-sustaining ecosystems.

By selecting a tailored combination of specifically formulated erosion and sediment control solutions, the project team was able to achieve operational efficiencies and deliver compliant, sustainable outcomes across the development site.
