VE Gro-Matt Powers Canberra’s Waterfront Rehabilitation

The revitalisation of a previously degraded Canberra lakeside precinct demonstrates an effective approach to urban rehabilitation. This landmark project aimed to restore the waterfront to a vibrant recreational hub featuring a scenic boardwalk, landscaped parklands, and green spaces designed to enhance biodiversity and community wellbeing.

The Challenge


The site presented several environmental challenges. Poor, low-nutrient soils combined with Canberra’s dry, cold autumn conditions meant traditional turfing methods were unable to be applied. The proximity to the lake increased the risk of sediment entering the waterway and affecting water quality. Additionally, local wildlife (particularly ducks) posed a persistent threat to young seedlings. A robust solution that aligned with environmental requirements was essential to support long-term establishment.


 

The Solution: VE Gro-Matt


To address these challenges, Vital Chemical’s locally based key industry partner Complete Turf & Landscaping recommended the application of VE Gro-Matt, a premium Bonded Fibre Matrix (BFM) hydromulch. VE Gro-Matt is specifically engineered for rehabilitation and revegetation projects, combining sustainably sourced, heat-treated wood fibres with a nutrient-rich composition to create optimal growing conditions.

Applied hydraulically, VE Gro-Matt provides uniform ground coverage and effective surface stabilisation, helping to reduce erosion and sediment movement into the adjacent lake. Its unique moisture-holding capacity proved critical in Canberra’s dry climate, reducing watering requirements and delivering cost efficiencies. By supporting rapid seed germination and strong root establishment, VE Gro-Matt created a resilient foundation for long-term vegetation growth.

 

The Results


The application of VE Gro-Matt transformed the site into a thriving green space. Despite persistent grazing from native ducks, the revegetation established a dense, durable ground cover that met all performance criteria. VE Gro-Matt helped stabilise the soil, reduce sediment movement, and support moisture retention and nutrient availability, enabling vegetation establishment in challenging conditions.
